The 'Too Good at Goodbyes' hitmaker reveals that he feels just as much woman as he is a man and that he has loads of heels at home.
"I remember, at the beginning of my career, being called a 'gay singer', and I didn't want that," Sam told The Sunday Times. "I wanted to be seen as a singer first, before people spoke about my private life. And now it's changed -- I've changed. I realize that maybe I don't mind that title."
The singer then went on with his story, revealing his cross-dressing past and how he got bullied because of it. "I love a heel. I've got loads of heels at home," he said. "People don't know this, but when I was 17, I remember becoming obsessed with Boy George and Marilyn and all that. There was one moment in my life where I didn't own a piece of male clothing."
"I would wear full make-up every day in school, eyelashes, leggings with Dr Martens and huge fur coats for 2 and a half years," he added. "I don't know what the title would be, but I feel just as much woman as I am man."
He continued, "I got teased a lot for it. But there were also people respecting me for walking around like that in my school." Sam also revealed that his appearance led to him getting assaulted when he was working at a bar. "I'd finished work and put on my clothes, and someone punched me in the chest, obviously just because of the way I looked. But that never bothered me, because I had this barricade up."
The Grammy Award winner then shared that he once spent a year at local bars drinking and smoking cigarettes. He admitted that he lost a little bit of control towards the end and said that he hasn't been drinking for two and a half month. The reason for that was quite ordinary. It was because he got his heart broken.
"I got dumped, so I was drowning in my sorrows," he said. Sam also revealed that he never went to the studio when he was happy. "When I'm in a relationship, I guess I'll have to just write about someone else or something else that makes me sad. I will always have a sadness in me, it will never leave," he continued.
While Sam stated that he doesn't have any boyfriend, the British singer/songwriter is rumored to be dating actor Brandon Flynn. The two of them were spotted locking lips in New York City and went on a Broadway date.
